Last week was a week of firsts in my room! We finally started our first week of guided reading in grades K-5. Kindergarteners worked on zoo phonics, my first graders read about how milk is transported from cow to consumer, second graders wrote paragraphs about how they've helped a friend, third graders learned all about the work of a guide dog, and fourth and fifth graders found out the differences between protagonists and antagonists.

It's been a busy second week at SMS! All the elementary students worked very hard on required standardized tests for the fall benchmark. Kindergarten students were tested using AIMSweb on Early Literacy and Early Numeracy. 1st grade did the same along with the MAP assessment for reading and math. Students in grades 2-5 competed AIMSweb oral reading tests and math probes and also partook in the MAP tests. What's their reward? A three day weekend! Hooray!
Now that the students have done all the hard work it's now my turn! I'll be spending some time gathering scores and getting ready for our RtI data meetings on Thursday of next week. During this meeting we will be able to work together to decide which students could benefit from some intervention services to help them become more successful in school! Between all the testing craziness I was able to meet with my Challenge students today! In third grade we worked on deductive thinking and logic puzzles. Students learned to look for clues, to solve logic elimination grids. (See the photo below: "Picnic" -can you figure it out?) In fourth and fifth grade we worked on convergent thinking which combines deductive and analytical thinking. I will say we had some stumpers today, but once students got a second look they were able to figure things out. (See the photo below: "Glorbs"- can you figure it out?) It's been a great week! I hope everyone enjoys the three day weekend. See everyone on Tuesday! |
